Baby Sign Language

We incorporate baby sign language into our daily routines in our infant program as a way to help the babies learn how to communicate early on. Teaching infants sign language has many proven benefits:

Promotes the development of language skills
Reinforces language skills already developed
Reduces frustration at not being able to express needs
Develops understanding of language for communication of emotions
Creates feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment
May increase IQ
Increases creative thinking
Teaches a 2nd language that is recognized (ASL)
Reduces unexplainable emotional outbursts
Increases early literacy skills
Teaches baby how to start (and participate in) a conversation

Our infant room teachers work with each baby to begin introducing simple signs such as "more", "please", "milk", "eat", etc. As a new sign is introduced, directions on how to make the sign are sent home so that you may practice the signs at home with your baby as well!
